French Folding Chair

I got this wonderful weathered folding chair at the auction.  Since I'm planning on keeping this for myself, I'll tell you that I only paid $1.00.  It is perfectly sturdy, too.

Here it is in the before stage.  I liked it just as is was, but I'm glad I decided to go "French".

I did a simple aging technique with the paint.  I used red craft paint and an old paint brush. Then with a fairly dry brush, I gradually added layer on layer until I got the right look.  I scrubbed on a dark brown wax with steel wool for more aging.

But the best part of the project is the stenciling.  I like to imagine that this chair is from a French beach resort.

Or that I just came home from the French market.  Maybe someday.

Now go visit the parties on the sidebar and see what everyone else is up to.

  1. Very pretty, Janet! I love the red and the stencil is a great touch! You got a great bargain there and it looks like a perfect chair for putting down those French market purchases.

  2. It is really nice. The stenciling is just the perfect touch! And the vignette is so pretty!

  3. I love the color and the stenciling. So cute.

  4. I thought it was authentic. Great job.

  5. It is a fabulous piece and your paint job makes it even more divine! $1.00...well, that is the best deal I've heard of lately :O)

  6. You did a great job on transforming your 100 pennies chair!

  7. Looks like it came straight from the hotel in France ... how ever did you get it on the plane? .... wonderful re-do ... thank you fro bringing it to the party!

  8. I love the before AND the after...what a fun chair!

  9. Janet, your French chair is so charming! I have been looking for chairs like this one for my deck. I am envious that you got yours for only $1! I love how you transformed yours. The finish and stencil look perfect!
